PBLA honors Jānis Kukainis with its top award

Jānis Kukainis, a longtime Latvian-American community activist, has been honored with its top award by the World Federation of Free Latvians (Pasaules brīvo latviešu apvienība, or PBLA).

In naming Kukainis, the PBLA noted his many years of service leading Latvian organizations and his efforts to convince U.S. politicians to support Latvia’s membership in the NATO defense alliance.

Viesturs Koziols is a real estate development entrepreneur and adventurer in Latvia. He is co-holder of the Latvian hot air balloon height and distance records and has been to the North Pole. Koziols is president of Avantis, a non-government youth organization that sponsored the film Atrasts Amerikā (Found in America). Koziols also is president and part owner (12.18 percent) of Dinamo Riga, a new hockey team that plays in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. In an interview from Finland, he talks about the team and its prospects.

Desmit par deviņdesmito

Atzīmējot Latvijas neatkarības proklamēšanas 90.gadadienu, portāls "Latvians Online" oktobrī intervēja 10 latviešus, kas dzimuši vai daudz gadus dzīvojuši ārpus Latvijas, bet tagad dzīvo un strādā Rīgā.   • Līga Kilman dzimusi Rīgā, bet trimdas gadus pavadija ASV. Pirms 6 gadiem atgriezās dzimtenē.
  • Matīss Kukainis dzimis ASV. Divus gadus dzīvo Rīgā, kur pašam savs advokatu birojs.
  • Pēteris Medenis dzimis Latvijā, pec II. pasaules kara emigrējis uz Austrāliju, tagad atgriezies dzimtenē.
  • Pauls Raudseps, dzimis ASV, tagad laikraksta "Diena" komentāru lapas redaktors.
  • Dīna Šillere dzimusi Čikāgā, tagad ir LR Valsts kases Personāla departamenta direktore.
